Egyptian Canopes
In archaeology, a canopic vase is a burial vase containing human remains. This is where the removed organs of a mummy were kept. In ancient Egypt, death was considered the beginning of new life. Thus one saw in the darkness the breeding ground for the daily rising of the sun. Man would also live on after death in the realm of the dead. Therefore, the Egyptians did everything they could to preserve the body of the dead.
The brain was removed through the nose with a hook; the intestines were removed from the corpse through an incision in the left side. The body was then placed in natron to dry, cleaned with palm wine, embalmed with oils and finally bandaged with linen. The removed stomach, intestines, lungs and liver accompanied the mummy in the tomb. They were kept in jars (or canopes) with an animal head or human head as a lid. These carved lids represented the four sons of Horus;
- Amset (man's head), where the liver was kept
- Duamutef (jackal head), in which the stomach was kept
- Hapy (baboon head), in which the lungs were kept
- Kebehsenoef (falcon head), in which the intestines were kept
Because the Egyptians considered the heart to be the seat of the soul, this organ was not removed from the body.
The four canopes, made of terracotta, ceramic or alabaster, were buried near the sarcophagus to preserve the unity of the body.
