Writers were very important and enjoyed great esteem among the Egyptian population, which for the most part consisted of farm workers and artisans. The hieroglyph for "writer" (sesh) depicted the three most important tools: a palette with two circles, one with red and one with black paint, a red water pot and a reed pen.
